Blog changes

Posted in Photographer, blog, thoughts on February 14, 2009 by rosh03

Over the next month I will be moving my blog and adding new sections.  Eventually, this location will no longer be updated.  I will post when that happens.

Currently, I’ve updated my http://people.roshsillars.com ,http://food.roshsillars.com, http://interior.roshsillars.com using the wordpress platform.  So, I will be able to offer content related to each area of photography.  I will most likely move this central blog to roshsillars.com where I will share the “best of my posts”

Still working it through…

Obviously, I’ve been focusing most of my efforts on http://newmediaphotographer.com  But, it is also important to up date my photography. It’s even more important to update my photography in relation to my portfolios.

I’ll keep you updated.

It’s fun to review

Posted in Photographer, Photography, Rosh Sillars, life, people photography, thoughts on December 31, 2008 by rosh03

I was asked by a student to answer a few questions for his newspaper class.  It is always fun to review. I thought I would share my answers.

“Here are the questions”

1) What does it take to be a photojournalist? The ability to tell stories with images.  You need the talents of a good photographer, ability to think fast and the understanding of good reporting.  Such as how to ask good questions.

2) When did you realize that you wanted to have a career in photojournalism?  I’ve been a photographer at heart since I was 3.  Photojournalism was a natural fit because I lived in a media family. I started working at my first newspaper at the age of 19.

3) What’s the difference between being a photographer and being a photojournalist? Generally a photographer creates quality images in a controlled environment.  A photojournalist creates great images from chaos.

4) What type of events do you like to take pictures of?  Historical events.  Usually political.

5) Is the job of being a photojournalist difficult? It’s a lifestyle.  If you enjoy the lifestyle it’s not hard, but every career has its challenges.

6) What are the pro and cons of being a photojournalist?  The pros are the opportunity meet great people, witness incredible events and visit interesting places.  Cons: Often the pay is not great compared to other forms of photography.

7) How do you tell a story through pictures?  I believe creating a variety of images is important.  Displaying the same type of image over and over is not very effective.  Create overall photographs to establish the scene, medium shots to tell the story and close up images to add drama.  Always be prepared. The photojournalist strives for the decisive moment. But, remember, ultimately photography is about light.

Photoshop and keeping with the times

I’ve been playing with post-processing.  High contrast, low saturation or Lucisart style photography has been all rage lately.  I’ve started working on some styles over the last six months.  I finally talked with few photo friends who use the styles successfully in their work.

I honestly didn’t realize there was a plug-in called Lucisart. But, once I was able to look it up, I was able to complete the puzzle.  Lucis is about $300-$600 depending on the version for the plug-in. I think I’m able to get what I need using the photoshop Raw platform.

Below are a couple examples.  I also created a page for this work on my web site.

Hangin’ with Stanley

Posted in Photo, Rosh Sillars with tags , , , , , , , on October 7, 2008 by rosh03

It has been a few years since the Stanley cup and I had time to catch up.  Six years I believe.  I spent the morning photographing friends and associates at the local FSN (fox sports) station.  They are a good crew and I always enjoy spending time with them.

It’s always good to hear Mike Bolts’ stories (the stanley cup handler)  from his travels around the world with the cup and players.  What an interesting job.

Hey, I’m happy with a visit every few years.

Why is it hard for me to remember the Red Wings won it this year?

I wish to thank all the people subscribing to my personal podcast.  It seems like I have new a subscriber everyday.

Well, I’m back on the road soon.  Ft. Lauderdale, Chicago, Worcester Mass and maybe Denver.  Plus, I have speaking dates around the country being set up.  I love travel, but of course, I miss my family.

So, if anyone is in need of a photographer in a nice tropical location for a week or two with kid friendly amenities, please give me a call.  My family would be most grateful. (I’ll pay for my families airfare).

Today is a catch-up day.  My assistant is in school and I have images to edit.

Again, thanks for being a reader and/or listener.  I really do appreciate it.  Of course, don’t forget, you can hear me regularly on prosperous artists and new media photographer

The Cup Cake Photographer

Posted in Food Photography, Photo, Photographer, Photography, Rosh Sillars with tags , , , , , , on August 7, 2008 by rosh03

I think I’m going to specialize in cupcake photography.  mmmmmmm.  This is the second shop in less then a year that I’ve been assigned to.  It’s a trend!  These shops seem to be making money, expanding and making darn creative cup cakes.  So, as of today, I’m now the official food, cake, cupcake photographer.

Believe me, it took a lot of cup cakes to earn the title of a cupcake specialist.  No, I didn’t photograph them, I ate them.

Below are a few images from my shot at the Cupcake Station in Birmingham MI.  Nice store and the owners are really nice people.
